Our Story The Kayak Shack has operated on the Weeki Wachee River since 2009, founded by local owners Jonathan and Amber Cone. For years, the business ran shuttle-based tours up to the Weeki Wachee headspring and Buccaneer Bay. When Weeki Wachee Springs State Park changed its regulations for outfitters operating at the headspring, The Kayak Shack restructured around a simpler model: every trip now launches and returns from the shop's own private dock downriver, keeping the whole experience in the owners' hands from check-in to check-out. What We Offer Rentals include a single kayak or paddleboard, or a tandem kayak for two paddlers, with a life jacket, vessel and oars (or paddle), launch fees, and free parking all included in the price. Reservations aren't required for standard rentals, but they're recommended during the busy season from March through September. The shop is open seven days a week, 8am to 5pm, and accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, debit, and cash. Because launches happen from the shop's private dock rather than a public ramp, outside kayaks and canoes can't be launched here — rentals are for gear rented on-site. Who It's For The self-launch, no-reservation-required format suits first-time visitors, families, and locals who want to paddle on their own schedule rather than book into a fixed tour time. Because trips are self-guided rather than captain-led, paddlers who want a fully narrated wildlife tour should confirm current tour availability directly with the shop before planning around one. On the River The Weeki Wachee River is spring-fed, clear, and calm, with no rapids, which makes it approachable for paddlers of most experience levels. The river is also part of a protected manatee habitat, and Hernando County's springs are a well-known winter refuge for manatees, who move into the warmer, spring-fed water as Gulf temperatures cool — roughly November through March is the strongest window for sightings. The Kayak Shack asks every paddler to follow its posted Rules of the River before launching: give manatees plenty of space, never chase, feed, or touch them, and keep noise and splashing to a minimum around them.
